Getting to the Heart of the matter
John Ellis

A Personal Pathway
Your unique story and goals are important to me, that's why I customise my approach accordingly, especially believing that therapy should never be a one-size-fits-all.
I am a successfully qualified counsellor, in clinical, supervised practice, offering my dedicated commitment for providing safe, ethical, and effective therapy, personalised to support your individual journey toward healing and growth.

Why people come for counselling
People come for counselling to discuss personal matters in a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment.
They may seek support for a whole range of life matters, not limited to anxiety, stress, depression, grief, relationship issues, trauma, or life's challenges and changes.
Counselling helps individuals understand themselves, develop coping strategies, improve well-being, build resilience, and make positive changes in their lives.
Me helping you help you!

My aim is to create a personalised approach that supports your individual needs and help you move towards meaningful, lasting, change. For this, I draw on a range of Psychodynamic, Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic (CBT) models of counselling.

More about my counselling practice
Counselling experience
Group work at Mind
I have co-facilitated a men’s support group at Mind, helping to provide a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental space where men can openly explore and talk about what is happening in their lives. My role involved supporting group members to share their thoughts, feelings and experiences, while encouraging respectful discussion and mutual support. I helped create an environment where individuals felt listened to, valued and able to speak openly about the challenges they were facing.
Additionally, over the past few years, I have co-led a Mind LGBTQ+ group, providing a safe, inclusive and supportive space for people experiencing mental health difficulties. The group enables individuals to talk openly about their thoughts, feelings and experiences, share the challenges they may be facing, and receive mutual understanding and support from others in a welcoming and non-judgemental environment.

Person to person
Most of my counselling work is person to person, face to face with individuals. I have helped people experiencing various impactful issues and problems in life, to manage or solve these pressing problems and ultimately improve their mental health and well-being.
My regular practice supervision is provided by a qualified clinical supervisor, who is a BABCP Accredited Therapist, a Registered Mental Health Nurse with a PhD.
I have proven experience of working with people experiencing various mental health challenges and conditions, not limited to:
- depression
- anxiety and panic
- suicidal thoughts
- ADHD
- compulsive behaviours
- sexuality and gender matters
- loss and bereavement
- relationship difficulties
About me
Working with people, to help them make the most of their mental health and well-being, has been a long-time passion of mine. I started to put this passion in to action when I began the first of many counselling educational courses. In addition to my current private practice, I have spent over a decade on a clinical placement at Mind, starting with telephone counselling, through face-to-face and on to Zoom with the Covid-19 pandemic, and co-facilitating two Mind groups. Each mode of counselling with Mind has been supported with regular clinical supervision, from practitioners with various modalities of practice.
As you've realised by now, my name is John Ellis. I live in south east London, where I have my counselling practice.

Ensuring your safety, confidence, and peace of mind, is a clear goal of my practice. To that end, I became a Professional Accredited Member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (PNCPS Acc.)* in 2026.
This higher level of practice recognition demonstrates my commitment to on-going education and training, for maintaining excellent standards in my professional and ethical practice of counselling.
